Who We Are

Cafe Bot is FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) high school robotics team #5479.  We were formerly a FIRST Tech Challenge team of the same name, with the number 4982.

The name “Cafe Bot” came from our idea of making hard work entertaining.  We aim to promote an atmosphere that is comfortable and friendly, similar to a café where friends might meet to collaborate together.  At Cafe Bot, friends and mentors get together to create robots for competition whilst having fun.

We are based in Webster Groves, Missouri.  However, our members come from multiple different school districts.  We are always seeking new members, so feel free to check out our contact page!

FIRST and the FIRST Robotics Competition

FIRST is an acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”.  FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway) to inspire students to pursue careers in science and engineering.  More information about FIRST can be found here.

FRC stands for “FIRST Robotics Competition.”  FRC is the highest level in the FIRST progression of programs.  In this competition, high school students are tasked with designing, building and programming a complex robot that must complete an ever-changing series of tasks.  FRC teams have only six weeks to complete their robots, starting on the first Saturday in January every year.  This year’s challenge is “Recycle Rush.”  Click here for a link to a detailed description of this year’s game!

During our three years in FTC, we received over twenty different awards and accolades, culminating in the 2014 FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship Inspire Award (3rd place), the absolute highest award possible in the FTC competition.  Shortly thereafter, we founded our new FIRST Robotics Competition team of the same name, making 2015 our rookie FRC season.

We would love to demonstrate our robot and share our knowledge of all things to do with FIRST with you or your group!  We are also actively seeking sponsors, so please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring a robotics team!
